Titolo: free wifi (hotspots) in rome
Inserito da: suomineito - Aprile 14, 2008, 07:48:35
im relocating to rome this summer and would need to connect frequently to the internet for work and study. im bringing my laptop. i do not have codice fiscale and im not willing to sign a 12months contract with fastweb or so as my need is just around 4months. i know there are several internet centers in rome but working/studying is quite difficult there as those are pretty expensive and there is no peace to work either. anyone knows good places in rome city center to get connected for free or price of coffee? any parks? stazione termini? im living a month in testaccio and then just next to vatican/metro cipro.

Hallo, Suomineito.

I'm probably not the more informed persons, as I'm not living in Rome. Nonetheless Simply checking in internet I found the following page:
http://free-hotspot.jiwire.com/search-wifi-hotspots-general.htm?type=centroid&radius=5.0&geocode_index=0&venue_group_id=0&radius_unit=&latitude=NaN&longitude=NaN&address=&city=rome&city_id=0&state_id=0&state=&country_id=107&country=&zip=&hotspot_name=&location_type_id=0&technology_id=0&pay_free=free&provider_id=1000213&ssid=&jump_letter=&wisp=no&limit=&startnum=1&num_per_page=10&tab=6& (http://free-hotspot.jiwire.com/search-wifi-hotspots-general.htm?type=centroid&radius=5.0&geocode_index=0&venue_group_id=0&radius_unit=&latitude=NaN&longitude=NaN&address=&city=rome&city_id=0&state_id=0&state=&country_id=107&country=&zip=&hotspot_name=&location_type_id=0&technology_id=0&pay_free=free&provider_id=1000213&ssid=&jump_letter=&wisp=no&limit=&startnum=1&num_per_page=10&tab=6&)
There you can search for all free hotspot all around the world.

Nonetheless, I would say that in Italy there is not the concept of giving you something for free... perhaps I'm wrong, but up to three years ago it was like that.

Many of the adresses that you get in such a webpage are hotels, therefore not useful for you. But there is also a couple of bar.
As far as I know also in the bar you get access, but only paying a fee.

Pehaps someone more informed than me could help you in a better way.

Do you speak/understand italian? I think that there could some pages in italian in internet. If you need any help, simply let me know. I'm not reading the forum very often, but I come.  ;)

Ciao,
Sara

thanks for the link. it seems like all of those hotspots are in hotels, so im not able to use those... and i do understand there are not so much things you get free in life :) but i was wondering if there could be any libraries, parks or so, where you could just sit down with your laptop, get connected and work. i already checked the web site of one of the biggest libraries in castro pretorio but their web site doesnt mention about wireless connection.

and yes i do understand some italian, but searching from the web is not the easiest thing with my knowledge of italian...

also, if someone happens to know about different type of contracts with different internet connection companies (i dont know more than fastweb but i guess there are more) it would be very helpful. i would need the connection only for 4 months, or only 3 could be fine as well, and im wondering if that is possible or is it really true you need a permanent address, codice fiscale and you need to accept to pay 12 months.

I found some more information. It seems that there are some "free" hot-spot in the following public places:

Villa Borghese
Villa Torlonia
Villa Ada
Villa Doria Pamphili
Villa Paganini

Unfortunately I don't exactly know where this villas are and which kind of access you can have. But they are defined public, therefore there should be some possibilities! ;)

Regarding a private phone line, the main operator in Italy is Telecom Italia.
I checked in the website (http://www.187.alice.it/cgi-bin/di_187/di/187/demand/product/serviceDetailCost.do?channelId=-536887615&tabClicked=Dettaglio+Costi&productOid=10629&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&pageTypeId=536888874&indexHistory=2 (http://www.187.alice.it/cgi-bin/di_187/di/187/demand/product/serviceDetailCost.do?channelId=-536887615&tabClicked=Dettaglio+Costi&productOid=10629&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&pageTypeId=536888874&indexHistory=2)) and it seems that you can get the line for less than 12 months, but you have a penalty fee to pay when you want to close the line.
But it's quite expensive:
96 euro for activating the new line
14,57 euro every month (cost of the line)
48 euro to close the line earlier than 12 months
Then you have the cost of the calls.... :-\

I also have to tell you that in Telecom no one will be able to speak english... therefore you are better to search for someone that can help you. And, most important... you need really a lot of patience! ::) Believe me!!! :o

And for sure you need a codice fiscale. You can ask for it. You find here the form:
http://moduli.deltaservicesrl.it/service/codicefiscalepf.pdf (http://moduli.deltaservicesrl.it/service/codicefiscalepf.pdf)
But I 'm not completely sure about where you can give the form to get the codisce fiscale... :-\
For sure in the so called "comune", thet is the office present in each italian city, where you can ask for all your personal document (identity card, etc..).
You can ask for it also in some italian consulate, but not all... :-\
